Expert Advice: Secondhand Shopping ft The Hickory Post

Secondhand shopping is something near and dear to us! Of course, we love sharing home finds from all over the web, but in our homes we have a mix of new, secondhand, auction finds, and thrift scores. Unfortunately, it’s not really helpful for us to share one-of-a-kind pieces that we find for ourselves.

But, our friends at The Hickory Post do know ALL about secondhand shopping and how to find items that you love!

Thank you to Sarah for sharing more about her new venture and how to get the look for less with items that tell a story!

Why shopping pre-loved might be great for you:

If you are a traditional or mid-century modern lover, then the possibilities are endless! So many people are passing on family furniture in exchange for bright and white everything. Even if you love that look, layering old and new is the best way to make your home cozy!

The Hickory Post is a furniture and art gallery dedicated to providing accessible art and design for all. The curated store features one of a kind artwork, furniture and home accessories that will make your house a home. Our pieces are hand selected focusing on quality, authenticity and affordability. We love design and stay up on the most recent trends as well as incorporating gems from the past. The Hickory Post strives to help you create a strong home that will tell a collected story full of meaningful treasures. Our inventory is ever-changing.

This is amazing. You can browse the store VIRTUALLY and see tags and details on each item.

Why the Hickory Post is passionate about what they do:

There are so many benefits to shopping secondhand!  Vintage shopping is sustainable and usually less expensive than shopping new.  Mixing in found treasures with updated pieces helps build character and charm in any home.   Shopping secondhand is an experience, similar to a treasure hunt.  We have a constant flow of new inventory and you never know what you are going to find!

When I look around my home, full of old and new things, I always remember where I was and who I was with when I admire my vintage finds.  I think that’s the reason I am so passionate about helping others find treasures for their homes.  These items start to tell a story of who you are and what you value.

3 tips on how to mix secondhand items with your current decor:

  1. When shopping secondhand try to imagine what an object COULD BE.  Meaning, look at the lines of a piece of furniture and not necessarily it’s condition or color.  What can you change about the item to make it better?  Could the frame to a piece of art be updated?  Could you spray paint an object to bring it up to date?  These minor changes instantly give items new life.

  2. Buy what you LOVE and don’t worry about where it’s going to go.   While I am not one for hoarding, my advice is to find pieces that you are immediately drawn to and then find a home for it later.

  3. Don’t be afraid to mix styles.  Your home does not have to be the same “period” or style throughout.  Some of my favorite interiors involve mixing century pieces with antiques, modern with traditional.  Mixing styles makes a home interesting and cozy.
